Creative Reference: Lighting, Contrast, Composition

For this month’s staff post, designer + animator Luke Barker lets us peek inside his process and inspiration when creating for motion.

“I’ve always been inspired by lighting and high contrast artwork,” says Luke Barker, a Chapel Hill, NC native and one of our latest design hires at the company. “Compositionally, I’m drawn toward design that feels like it has room to breathe… something that makes me feel like I’m in the right place here at Trollbäck.”

When designing for motion, Barker likes to draw from the foundations of cinematography –– experimenting with the intricacies of lighting, scale, and contrast within his composition.

Below is a collection of some of his latest creative references that demonstrate this process from artists Daniel Linthwaite, William Kessling, Samuel Burgess Johnson and Richard Serra.
